Professor of Transplant Surgery and Honorary Consultant Surgeon
Professor Nicholson is a transplant and endocrine surgeon with a specialist interest in live donor nephrectomy and renal transplantation. His research interests are in the fields of normothermic organ preservation and ischaemia-reperfusion injury. His group was the first to perform renal transplants after ex vivo normothermic perfusion (EVNP).
He is the Director of the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) in Organ Donation and Transplantation (core funding £3.8 million over 5 years). The aim of the BTRU is to develop new approaches and technologies in transplantation that increase the number of donor organs and improve allograft survival.
Professor Nicholson is a Professorial Fellow in Medicine at St Catharine’s College.
